Ready to be Dressed

Posted by
Sugata (Lake Forest, United States) on 28 September 2019 in Art & Design and Portfolio.

The photos in this photo series will show different stages of idol-making in the dingy lanes of Kumartuli (clay-workers' colony) in Kolkata. These idols are then carried to different locations all over the city for different festivals, most importantly the festival of Durga Puja, which is the five-day worship of the Goddess Durga in October.

The idols are made with clay applied over a bamboo and straw skeleton. Heads are made from clay using molds. After the clay is smoothed and dried, the idols are painted and dressed in fabric and ornaments. Here, an idol of the goddess Durga waits to be dressed after being fully painted.

Thanks a lot to everyone who commented on my photos, or even stopped by for a visit. The comments have been pouring in pretty fast and I'm finding it increasingly difficult to reply to each individually. I'd rather spend that time in viewing others' photos and commenting there. But I do read each comment individually, and if you ask me something specific, I'll answer that.
